What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a restorative dental treatment used to replace missing teeth. Dental bridges are secured in place using abutment teeth or implants, and are designed to fill gaps with natural-looking and functional teeth. You might need a dental bridge if you lost a tooth in an accident, through dental damage, gum disease, or because of severe tooth decay. A bridge eliminates gaps in the smile, restoring function, improving speech and aesthetics, and preventing neighboring teeth from shifting out of place.

A bridge consists of one or more prosthetic teeth, called pontics, suspended between the pair of crowns. To keep the bridge fixed in place, a traditional bridge is placed between two neighboring teeth that serve as anchors. These abutment teeth are shaped to accommodate the crown securing the bridge. An implant-supported bridge is similar, but relies on implant posts for stability instead of natural teeth. A traditional bridge can replace one to three teeth depending on location, while an implant bridge may replace up to four.

The Dental Bridge Process

dental bridges in Queens, NYYour first visit involves a consultation with our dentist to determine whether you are eligible for dental bridge treatment. Our team will take x-rays and digital images to determine bone and tooth health. We'll discuss your unique needs and whether you'd be better suited with a traditional bridge or an implant-supported one. You'll need good oral health to form a stable foundation for your bridge, so if you have health issues such as tooth decay or gum disease, we'll address these first.

For a traditional bridge, the process takes two visits. On the first visit, our dentist will re-contour the abutment teeth and select the shade for your dental bridge. We'll take impressions of your teeth and send them to a trusted dental lab to fabricate your custom bridge. A temporary bridge will be cemented in place for you to use in the meantime. During the second visit about two weeks later, we will remove the temporary bridge and see how well your new bridge fits. Once minor adjustments are made, the new bridge is bonded in place, and you'll have a complete smile you can enjoy for years to come.

Taking Care of Your New Bridge

Taking care of a bridge is fairly straightforward, but it's important to pay careful attention. When you have a dental bridge, it is essential to brush and floss your teeth regularly. In addition, you should see our dentist at least twice every year for routine dental checkups and cleanings. You can utilize floss threaders, which help to eliminate bacteria and plaque from hard-to-reach spaces between the dental bridge and adjacent gums and teeth. When optimal dental hygiene is maintained, you can expect your dental bridge to last a decade or more.

How Long Will It Take to Get Used to My Dental Bridge?

Just like any other dental work, dental bridges may take up to one week to adjust. However, once you get used to the feeling of fixed bridges, you will not even notice it is there. If your dental bridges are still uncomfortable after a week of having them, reach out to our dentist to ensure they are fitting correctly and so we can make any necessary adjustments.
